The Old Bookkeepers are a semi-secretive organization within the city of Vigil. They are as old as Vigil themselves, and while their existence is well known by the higher-ups within the College and city, they are allowed to operate. Nobody knows the true intentions of the Old Bookkeepers, their stated mission is to collect and protect tomes, books, scrolls, letters, parchements, tablets, and any other form of writing, to preserve them for the historical value and insight. An added mission of theirs is to seek out books and other written works that describe old magics, spells, boons, and rituals that could be used for more nefarious goals, and lock them away to prevent their destruction on the world if they fall into the wrong hands.

The Old Bookkeepers are decentralized for the most part, many scribes spend most of their lives away from the city of Vigil, in pursuit of forbidden and destructive knowledge for safeguard the world from, stopping into Vigil only to drop off their wares. Money is of little importance to the members of the group, aside from its power as a bargaining chip in securing tomes and scrolls and other secrets. Members are often picked from a young age for their steadfast resolve and honest nature, and swear oaths for the remainder of their lives. The more youthful members of the group travel the world in search of powerful artifacts, while those lucky enough to grow old many the endless halls of the the library housing all their wares. That doesn’t prevent people from being wary of the faction, and suspecting the group ha ulterior motives. But for the time being, Vigil keeps an eye of the group, but allows them to operate in their city.
