When the Scaleplague devastated the already dwindling number of Dragons, those who survived did so through one of three ways. The two better-known methods are at the center of the Draconic faith, consuming gold and consuming blood. However, some Dragons chose a third way of staving off the disease, abandoning their draconic forms altogether. The Dragons had always possessed the ability to change forms into a Humanoid species, whether that be Human, Elf, Dwarf, or otherwise. Some Dragons found that by remaining in their Humanoid form, they were able to resist the disease for a much longer period of time. While they would still need to consume gold or blood to survive, they could do so much less frequently (even to the point that their true hue would not change). Some of these Dragons even forgot they were Dragons entirely, but some managed to hold on to their memories.
The side effect of Dragons staying in their Humanoid forms was that they began to interact with Humans much more frequently, even marrying them and beginning families, whether that family is aware of their true nature or not. A result of draconic blood being introduced to a bloodline is the rare but possible occurrence of a Dragonborn. Much like Half-Dragons, Dragonborn possess draconic features and visages. Unlike Half-Dragons, Dragonborn are not necessarily divine in nature, it just means somewhere down the line you had draconic parentage; although many in the Draconic faith view it as a mark of saintly providence.
