The Genasi are the creation of the the Kami, life given to the elements by divine creators. Just like the Kami that created them, the Genasi typically embody the ideals of the elements they are modelled after. Fire Genasi embody both the protective and destructive side of fire, Water Genasi the calm and tempestuous nature of water, and so on. While each individual Genasi may lean one way or another, they recognize the need for balance, just like their divine creators. A rare few are blessed by the Kami and are more in touch with the elements, being able to summon and manipulate an element and even taking on some physical characteristics that resemble their element. For instance, a Fire Genasi blessed by Kagutsuchi might have bright orange hair that dances like wisps of fire, while a Water Genasi blessed by Suijin might have irises that imitate water, rippling light like waves of the bottom of a shallow pool.

GenasiĀ are rarely seen with a member of another clan, as each fulfills its own purpose. These clans are nomadic, staying in one place only as long as they need to complete their mission. Because only a rare, lucky few are blessed by the Kami, many of the members of each clan are not plane-touched, and are instead mostly Humans, with a few Elves here and there.

TheĀ Genasi, believing they are touched by the elements, believe that they are linked to nature, and therefore are sworn to protect it. They do not believe in the selling of land, borders between nations, or that one person could own land, instead that land belongs to everyone. The land is there to support life and should be celebrated and venerated. These beliefs are similar to ones held by Wood Elves, and the two groups get along well enough. Even though they are trained in the ways of war, it is a last resort, as war is unappealing and leads to exploiting and destroying land.

This belief extends to their place in this world, while they are found in the highest abundance in the island nation of Kaicho, they can be found living nomadically throughout the world. The clans tend to stick to their own when in abundance, but they do not recognize territorial disputes in Kaicho. Outside of Kaicho, the settlements the clans do make are made of temporary structures such as tents; these makeshift settlements are easily deconstructed to be on the move quickly, or abandoned, if need be.
