The Grotesques are the Gods of Demiurges, who long ago ruled over the world when old and forgotten Gods were worshipped. Chief among the Demiurges is Thelema, the God of Want, and Desire. Those paramount to the Demiurges, but still below Thelema, were known as the Grotesques, who specifically embodied an ideal. Aiwass, for instance, embodied the ideal of Intelligence, Therion Strength, and Hrad Constitution. The Grotesques were imprisoned within the planets long ago, one in each planet, by an Archon, who sacrificed their bodies to create the planets that serve as the jails for the Grotesques. However, before being imprisoned, the Grotesques unleashed Seht, the God of Hatred and Curses, and doomed the life that the Archons saved. Seht warped the appearance of those who stood against the Grotesques to reflect the weapons they wielded in the war, and fractured the collective memory of all lifeforms, creating the differences in language, culture, and religion that fuels the suffering of today.
The Grotesques, trapped deep within the planets, are thought to have created the vast networks of caves and the resulting Underdark. the caves are the results of the Grotesques attempts at escaping, but never creating a passage large enough to fit their entire body through. However, the unintended side effect of this is that the words of the Titans are thought to be easier to hear in the Underdark, making their influence and corruption easier, particularly among those who delve deeper into the caves.
