Heralds are distinguished from the Archons and the Gods they brought into being mostly by their form. They take on a more bestial appearance than their Aeon counterparts, as do their creations. Heralds are tied to the Ancestral Plane, and are in turn associated with the heart and wisdom. Borne of the primal nature of their plane, the Heralds took on bestial characteristics, though none of them quite looked like the species they would go on to create. Many Heralds are associated with a Totem, or a Divine Animal. Examples include Oubaste-Sahmat with the Sphinx, Yama with the Hydra, and Cigwe and the Thunderbird. The Herald is typically a God who vanquished, conquered, or tamed the Totem, borrowing their naturally divine nature to lend to their children. The standout exception to the rule being Apep, who was instead the Totem of the Naga, who was conquered by the Orcs, but eventually evaded its captors and brought along with it a cult of Orcs who would become the first of the Yuan-Ti.
