Muse of Poetry and Arithmetic

kuh-LIE-oh-pea, Rhymes with “The tie so tea.”

Kalliope is the Muse of Poetry and Arithmetic, and is primarily concerned with the mathematical relationship between elements; how much large one army is than another, how many people can fit in a given area, how many trees are left after a forest fire, are all in the purview of Kalliope. The extends into the art of poetry and the science of arithmetic, with poetry involving the mathematical relationship between words and syllables in the meter of a poem. Those blessed by Kalliope gain a keen understanding of mathematical functions and relationships and the ability to perform complex mathematical equations in a split second. This understanding is fundamental to the art of poetry, as a master poet must quickly determine the relationship between all the words possible in a poem and determine the right selection and arrangement of words to paint an eloquent picture through their prose.

Of course Kalliope grants her blessings to poets and mathematicians, but it is also often extended to merchants, who use the expertise in math to quickly calculate costs, expenses, prices, and discounts on large or numerous transactions.
