Tritons are sometimes called Sea Elves, because they used to be just that, Elves imbued with the gifts of speed and breath underwater. However, millennia ago, the sea Elves left the Material Plane for the plane of elemental water, in order to fight the Sahuagin. Then, several thousand years later, the Sahuagin began to prey upon the prime material plane, and the Sea Elves rushed back to fight them. However, when they returned, they no longer quite resembled the Sea Elves who had left all those years ago. They also had long since ditched the moniker of Sea Elves, opting instead for Tritons.

Tritons are the guardians of the sea first and foremost, protecting it from within, however, they also serve as protectors of the surface world from the horrors beneath the sea, specifically the Sahuagin, the devotees of the God of fear, Novaean. The Tritons are a noble race, with favorable relationships with all races, excluding the obvious Sahuagin. They are ready to lay down their lives for one another and anyone else, because they believe they, as children of Oirbsen, are guaranteed to pass on to the afterlife, especially if laying down their life to protect others. However, their pride gets in the way of accepting outside help, and they are cautious, sometimes even downright skeptical, about a non-triton’s ability to accomplish the same task as them.

Tritons do not fear death, in fact, they fear very little. From a young age, they are subjected to all sorts of fearful situations in order to expel, or at least bury, all their fears to help them fight the Sahuagin, who feed on fear. Because of this, they are notorious for seeming emotionless and stern, but they consider it a worthwhile trade-off to help fight their enemies.

Tritons look very similar to Humans, with very smooth and streamlined features. Some believe they trace their lineage back to the Elves, more specifically the mythical race of sea Elves that once rule the ocean. Some support this belief with the fact that they worship Oirbsen as their creator, who is often venerated as the God of the sea in Elven pantheons. One theory is that through interbreeding with coast-dwelling Humans, they created a new race with the best of both races with little weakness.

Their skin is a shade of blue, males darker than females, their hair can be colored the same as Humans, but is more often a more vibrant hue, like green or pink. What little body hair they have they shave, and wear special helmets to streamline their head. They wear tight fitting clothes, and whatever armor they do wear is streamlines to allow them to maintain a high swimming speed. They prefer to use thrusting weapons, spears and tritons, or magic that works for their surroundings.
