Long ago, the Aeno family seized the throne of Illythkos, and outlawed the worship of all Celestials before them. Followers of all religions were wither driven away from the cities, punished, or hid their beliefs. Notably, all the Dragonborn fled the nation in exile rather than abandon the Oromasdian faith central to their very existence. In an ironic twist, a great messenger was born to the royal family.
Paal was said to be touched by the heavens, with wings of a dragon. But her mother, Antha, was afraid of what Titos would do if he found out, and hid here away. Still, word began to get around, and people flocked to Paal to worship her. When Titos found out, he killed his wife and locked Paal away, and killed anyone found to be openly worshipping her over him. However, his actions created a martyr and drove more to the Hreshtaki faith.
When Paal died under the Aeno family’s rule of Illythkos, those who worshipped her were visited in the night by the Saint of Freedom, and led to their new homeland. The island was donned Opaal, denoting the inhabitants devotion to the radiant daughter. The Opaal adopted the Oromasdian faith as their official religion, ascending Paal into the pantheon for them. Although they are wholly devoted to the Draconic Prophets, they do not restrict religion as their former rulers had.
Although their knights are well trained and devoted to the nation, Opaal rarely reaches beyond its own borders in combat, their position on an island is a strategic advantage they don’t wish to give up. While Opaal and its people worship and serve the Almighties, they do not outlaw the worship of other Gods, learning a lesson from their previous overlords.
Opaal is an island nation of rejects and oppressed. Pendrop is the home of the first Gnomes who left their clans to seek knowledge over duty. Caerigalli is the home of the first Dragonborn who were kicked out of their cities for their visage, as well as those who followed them, viewing the Dragonborn as holy saints walking the earth. Opaal is the capital, and the home of those who fled Illythkos long ago when the Aeno family took over and killed their religious icon.
