Endonym: Urótóneiro
While Elves believe they were created to protect the passage of time and the balance of nature, and Dwarves believe the Mountains were made for them to protect and be protected, and Men believe they are to protect the existence of good, Gnomes believe they are alive to protect Upeiron. While many believe dreams are fleeting dances of the sleeping imagination, Gnomes believe that they are as real as nature or mountains or civilization. To them, when you fall asleep, your soul leaves and enters Upeiron, a near-infinite plane of near-infinite possibility. They believe that they are made of Upeiron and are therefore bound to protect it.
The Gnomes seek knowledge and other scholarly pursuits. They believe in Upeiron, but don’t believe that they have any power over it, and don’t believe they are made of it. Long ago, some of the younger members of the Gnomes began to question their elders. Because they could not see Upeiron, and were not allowed to witness the elders enter the realm or do so themselves, they chose to believe that it all must be a lie. They were cast out or left willingly, depending on who you ask, and began to seek out knowledge, supplanting their former Gods of Sleep and Dreams as Gods of Memory and Knowledge. Their ultimate goal was to discover for themselves how to traverse Upeiron or to disprove the ability to do so as well as their supposed connection to it.
The Gnomes are short in stature, shorter than Dwarves but taller than Halflings. They are thought to be a older species than most others. Because Upeiron was created of the dreams of living beings, the Gnomes could only come about after the it was created. The Gnomes are sheepish in looks with curly hair all over their bodies, square pupils, hooves, and sometimes even horns.
