The Morrigan is the Queen of the Walkyrie, a group of warrior Gods and Goddesses, and resides in the Shadowfell. The Walkyrie once belonged to other pantheons, serving an ancient but dead and forgotten God. They gathered those who died in battle and brought them to a grand resting place fit for their honor of duty. However, those Gods are dead now, and the Walkyrie were forgotten, until they were given a home in the Shadowfell, where Fenjja crafted them a leader from another long forgotten deity, the Morrigan. She and her comrades place their marks on soldiers about to go to battle, deciding who may live and who may die. Sometimes, these souls are forgotten, wiped from the annals of history. If this is the case, they wind up in the Shadowfell, in Valhalla. Valhalla was once a grand and majestic hall, filled with the noises of drinking and battling, but it now stands decrepit, filled only by an eerie silence occasionally broken by the pained moans of its inhabitants.
The Walkyries, once powerful and proud, are now gaunt and ashamed, a husk of their former glory. They still serve their old purpose, gathering the fallen in battle, however, it is now more a punishment rather than badge of honor. Dying in battle is often a sure-fire way to being remembered and thus staying out of the Shadowfell, bards write songs about you and people tell your story and say your name. However, some die a coward’s death, such as those punished for desertion or who commit suicide, or are denied the honor of death on the battlefield, like those captured and executed, and on them the Walkyries descend quickly and unforgiving. Still many more meet their end guided by a Walkyrie, the once great warriors, now forgotten, who wish to impose their own fate on their victims. The Walkyries once performed their duty with zeal and pride, but they are now cold and heartless, taking souls rather than guiding them to Valhalla.
